From zero to running the London Marathon in 2013 ???

  • Hi,

My friend and i have managed to get a place in the London marathon in 2013. Nether of us have any running abilities i need to lose about 3stone and a lot of people think we are a little mad. Do any of you think this is possible??? Going from zero to running 26.2 miles.... We both have just turned 40... May be a mid life crisis thing!!!

  • I'm 52, overweight and asthmatic. I only started running in Nov 2011, and I have a place in the Bristol Half Marathon Sep 2012. I had never ran before at all so I started with the 'Couch to 5K' podcasts on the NHS website, they are brilliant and will get you up and running for 30 minutes continuously without overdoing it. I'm really enjoying the buzz of achievement, and if I can do it, you definitely can... Go for it!!! :-)

  • b4bob, you can definately do it. I was 14.5 Stone and 51 when I started running last March with the aim of doing the Glasgow half-marathon in Sept'. I completed that plus a few other races up to 16 miles.

This year I am planning 2 marathons and a 40mile Ultra trail race.

I am now 52, 12 stones and just about to head out on a 14mile training run on my Marathon Schedule. My first marathon is in April.

Think positive. Follow a good training plan.

  • Definitely possible! GO FOR IT! And have fun! :)

  • Certainly is possible - go for it and don't forget to have fun.

  • I was turned 55 when I ran my first marathon - with around 2,000ft of ascent - after only 15 months of running and got round OK.  The flat streets of London shouldn't be any problem for you youngsters.

  • Slabhappy, that is seriously impressive! I've just started running in the last month after hating running all my life!

I do cycle and walk so am already reasonably fit but, having lost nearly 3 stone at weightwatchers, I decided to give it one final try and lo and behold, I've caught that bug!

Not sure marathons are in my plan but I would probably consider a half. At the moment I'm happy to get to 5k and am about to start increasing the distance.

  • Well done on the weight loss Gary.

  • Of course you can do it! You have shed loads of time to train so I genuinely would advise you start now. Get some proper kit and make a start. Even if you can only manage power walking at this stage it will soon turn into a five minute jog, then before you know it 10k runs! I got my charity place last August and I started training straight away and I am so glad I did. I couldn't jog for 5 minutes without getting out of breath and now with only 10 weeks to go to my London Marathon attempt, I am running 20k in 2 hours! You'll be amazed at what you can do! Good luck!

  • Thank you for all the kind words........ have now done a few walks just to get the body moving again.. Looked at this website loads, have now put together a few plans to build up to running and on after that.....

  • Have a look on the run england site for a local group, I joined a ladies beginners group 6 weeks ago, I struggled with the run one minute, walk one minute that they started me on.  6 weeks later im now doing 5k easily.  Its nice to have the advice and encouragement of the other runners and the group leaders.  You can do it xxx

  • Great inspiration guys i'm doing 5k's at the moment looking to longer distances now but marathon seems along way off although i fancy the challenge

  • How do you get a place in the VLM in 2013, I thought I'd have to wait for the ballot after the 2012 VLM, if there is a way to put in for 2013 now I'd like to know

  • Yes you are right... and even though it’s still not guaranteed yet, a good friend of a friend runs a big charity and applies for a number of pleases each year.  But I was looking on the bright side and decided go on with the training anyway.... Hopping for support and advice. Would also like to tell everyone about the journey.....

  • That's great, I've put in for my first marathon too, the south downs in June... Er didn't think that through 1st marathon and bloody big hills. You'll get loads of help and advice and definitely doable
