Open Thread - Edinburgh Marathon 2013

OK, I have looked around on here for a forum about the Edinburgh Marathon and for the most part only found posts from bugs offering a place to another runner, or wanting a place because there are only Charity places left, so I figured It might be helpful and a bit of fun to start a thread for more general discussion about the event.

Given that there are some 30,000 folk taking part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival, and some 15,000 will be running the full Marathon on the 26th May this year, there must be some runners on here either taking part (yours truly included), wanting to chat about marathons and marathon training in general, or looking for information about the course, the city, or indeed looking to get or pass on a place.

London may get its own Forum, and rightly so as it IS the biggie in the UK, and it would not be possible for Running Bug to provide a dedicated forum for every UK Marathon, so, here is one I prepared earlier.......

I ran the Edinburgh Marathon in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011, so can maybe offer some helpful advice and tips, and it would be great to share how our training is going, so..............herewith the unoffical Edinburgh Marathon thread !!

London 10k run

Is anyone running The Colour Run in Manchester? - aim to get coloured not speedy!

These colour runs (or color runs) in the US look like a crazy fun event, 5k just for fun, with an aim to get coloured in powdered paint rather than run for a specific time/pace. They're now starting here in the UK.

Is anyone planning on running the Manchester one in July? http://www.thecolorrun.co.uk/

It seems pretty pricey at nearly £30 but raises funds for Stand up to Cancer. I don't think any of my friends will do it, so I thought I'd check if any bugs were going to be there...

A Fear of Racing?

Ok, so this may sound a little bizarre but whenever I come to think about racing I get excited for the opportunity to PB. However, when I come to actually entering races there's a little part of me that starts putting barriers up. I've done a couple of races, not many and to be completely honest I'd say that I've only truly enjoyed two or three of them. (This is down to the races being on athletics tracks with distances being 1500m and 3km...I'm a 10k / HM road running kinda girl). Another thing is the whole planning race day. Again, this excites me when I'm actually doing the planning but come race day I seem to dream up unfortunate / unlucky events or situations i.e. transport being late or delayed; not being able to find my bag at the end.

To be honest, I don't think I've raced enough in my running 'career' so to speak. 1 HM, 1 track 10k, 1 failed attempt at a road 10k (due to shin splints) and a small handful of Parkruns (one of my favourites, I have to admit).

I can't quite put my finger on this as I love going for runs & doing my sessions but racing....? hmmm

Does anybody ever experience this? Or even vaguely understand my ramblings....?

Just a quick one to see if any bugs are doing this event this year! Usually a well attended event, cant wait!!!!!!!

First event since injury last year and other related foot injuries, but hopefully seen the back of them. Fingers crossed.

Hi all

Anyone done the above ? Have run 10 Londons but last was about 6 years ago now. Just making a comeback and only running 2.6 miles but want to have a long term goal and thats to run another marathon. Currently living in Helensburgh Scotland and thinking would love to do this - how does this compare to the Edinburgh race?

Can anyone help with a choice of location for next year for a first marathon? Looking for something well organised - I have looked at Blackpool, Manchester, Milton Keynes or Shakespeare in Stratford on Avon. Any views on which I should choose please??

Just found out yesterday I got into the GNR, haven't done it for a few years though and this time doing it with other half. Any suggestions for places to stay reasonably near to the start and at a fair price? I've had a look on Nirvana Travel but all quite pricey.......

I have just signed up for the Staplehurst 10k in June. I remember Sunrise Surprise signing up for this as well, are there any other bugs entering it? Looks handy for most of the Kent and Sussex bugs.

Dear All, although not a running event, this appeared the best forum to place this.

Are you currently taking part in Ultra Running or even considering it? Then we may have the ideal event for you to attend.

Team Hope, as part of our fund raising target, have organised an Ultra Running Expo to be held at West Midlands Fire Service HQ in Birmingham on Saturday 6th of July between 12.00 and 17:00.

We have lined up four inspirational speakers from the world of Ultra Running and Triathlon that will give talks on preparation, nutrition and more. Some of these speakers need no introduction to most, but the cost of entry is worth it alone to hear them!

We have Rory Coleman, Mark Kleanthous, Mark Hines and Elisabet Frankenberg to date. In addition, there will be kit to try and buy, events to enter and many people to talk to from experienced Ultra runners to newbies.

Car parking is free, refreshments will be available, and goody bags for all entrants. In addition we will be running a raflle and giving spot prizes out throughout the day.

The cost of the event is £25.00 in advance or £30 on the day. It must be noted that this event is not profit making and all proceeds go directly to our charity (in fact ticket purchase is via Just Giving!!).

Please support us and at the same time listen, try, buy and meet!!

York Marathon 2013

After recently running a 4.57.40 in the Milton Keynes marathon I just managed to get a place in York!!!!! I'm looking for any other runners practical advice on how to increase stamina & speed. Obv I will b following a harder training plan now I know what to expect but I would love some other viewers run points. One thing I struggled with was my own mind games and keeping my head straight. Hi, Anyone else doing the Milton Keynes Marathon on Bank Holiday Monday? I took part in last year's inaugural event too, in torrential rain, and am hoping the weather will be better this year!!

If anyone is doing it, look out for a slightly unshaven 51 year old, 6 foot two bloke wearing a Water Aid T shirt with signatures all over the back - that'll be me. Mind you, as I'm aiming for 5 hours ish, you're unlikely to see me unless you're near the back of the pack.
