For a trail shoe with well thought out cushioning, the stability is fantastic.

Tread pattern gives fantastic grip on pretty much most surfaces.

As well being excellent performers they look the bomb too: ‘Boom’!

CONS

If used purely for purpose the lacing system tends to wear through before the shoe is totally trashed.

Can be slippery on bare rock or crossing stiles!

RRP can initially be off putting.

“As soon as I hit the first trails in these babies I found the feel and the ride excellent. With all the recent freeze/thaw conditions I feel these shoes have had an ‘in at the deep end’ test with the terrain going from hard pack/frozen trail to deep mud, thick clay, snow, tree roots and steep inclines all in a few paces! And yet the grip always filled me with confidence.

“The sole is like a slimmed down, toned up familiar old friend! The aggressive lugs are back but arranged in a better thought out, more widely dispersed pattern leading to about a third reduction on the number of lugs present on the sole compared with earlier models. However, each lug is slightly bigger and has a much more defined profile, thus leading to the Speed Cross retaining their excellent grip in varied terrain. The new tread layout also seems to have increased the shoes’ ability to shrug off excess mud and clay much more efficiently.

“The overall design and construction is great, the bonded upper gives them an awesomely smooth profile. This helps eliminate the stress and fray points of a traditionally stitched shoe. The shoe feels very light on the foot and I’m told they have reduced the weight since the earlier models; this in part is due to the redesigned tread as well as the new bonded construction. The arch support was good but maybe a little higher compared to the earlier models. The toe box looks slimmer than before but still has plenty of room. The flexibility is good. In warmer/drier conditions I run in minimalist shoes and found no problems switching between the two, even though the heel-toe drop is 10mm.

“Anyone who is familiar with the Salomon range will be used to their QuickLace system. It can be a little tricky to adjust tension across the shoe, especially when caked in mud; and in my experience, has a tendency to wear through before the rest of the shoe. I would like to see some strengthening maybe a plastic sheath to prevent wear between the ‘lace’ and shoe? That said my Salomon’s have consistently lasted me twice as long as many brands.

“As a bit of a skin-flint the RRP of these shoes does make me sweat but the ride quality and longevity of all Salomons I’ve tried makes them a great deal especially if you shop around for a good price.

“Overall, an excellent all-round performing and looking shoe that craves the trail and somebody to take them there, woe betide anyone who buys these as a fashion accessory!”

User Review by Jonathan J Mackintosh

“Back at the beginning of December I received a preview pair of Merrell Mix Master Tuff. Due for release mid March, the Merrell Mix Master Tuff is one of the latest offerings in the Merrell M-Connect series and is a more rugged version of the road/trail hybrid Mix Master series, designed for the toughest conditions you’ll encounter on the trail.

“I was suitably impressed with the Merrell Mix Master Aeroblock that I tested back in October but the Merrell Mix Master Tuff takes it to a whole new level and is now one of my go-to trainers for trail runs of any distance."

“The stack height of the shoe, the distance between the bottom of your foot and the ground, is 23mm and there is a 4mm drop from heel to toe. As such, the shoe sits midway between a traditional running shoe and a completely minimalist shoe. A 1mm forefoot shock absorption plate maintains forefoot flexibility and protects the foot by distributing pressure. The tread consists of 3.5mm lugs and, as with the Aeroblock, uses a Merrell mix sole/sticky rubber.

“The lightweight fabric and synthetic upper makes use of a bellows tongue to keep debris out, essential when out on the trail. Whilst not waterproof, the mesh is highly breathable and lets water quickly drain from the shoes. A protective skirting runs around the upper, offering complete protection from trail debris.

“In terms of fit the Tuff has considerably more room in the toe box and is a looser fit than the Mix Master Aeroblock, something I personally prefer as it facilitates greater toe splay. The shoe was comfortable from the outset, with no requirement to ‘break it in’. It’s not a warm shoe given the highly breathable mesh but, again, this is something that works for me. In wet weather, the Tuff has coped well with deep puddles, with no retention of water. Having tested the shoe on a variety of terrain over the past two months, the only ‘issue’ I have come across has been with ice and I have yet to find a trainer that does cope well in those conditions.

“In summary, the Merrell Mix Master Tuff is a high quality construction shoe, just as you would expect from Merrell, and offers excellent levels of protection from the terrain and elements. Thanks to this combination, I have earmarked it as my likely ultramarathon shoe for 2013 and would definitely recommend the Mix Master Tuff to anyone looking for a trail shoe suitable for any distance.”

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: adidas Kanadia TR4 review

Our Score: 2.5 out of 5
Price: £54.99

Review by Mike Ovens

PROS

1. And because of this the shoe gave very little response during foot strike and they also felt heavier on than they appeared. It wasn’t a very flexible shoe, but that didn't affect my running gait.

The sole comprises a series of "small half moon" shaped studs that didn't provide enough grip on more demanding surfaces. This was confirmed when tackling a steep scree covered, decline. The support was compromised by the restricted feel of the shoe, however the heel, and in particular the achilies support was very comfortable.

The material of the upper doesn't give the impression that it will provide adequate protection or will wear well. Plastic lace hoops give a substandard appearance (but they are possibly there to keep the water out). The design is good – the popular three-stripe Adidas brand.

The price reflects the value of this shoe and this ‘budget shoe’ would suit a casual off-road runner or beginner. I prefer a more technical shoe that provides greater support and protection from the elements/terrain.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Adidas Response 18 review

Our Score: 3 out of 5
Price: £80

Review by Julia A

PROS

1. I prefer lightweight shoes and the fact I am returning from injury means my feet need very flexible shoes. However for someone who needs support and doesn't mind a heavier shoe, these were ideal.

The overall fit was soft and pliable and they fitted well around the top of the foot holding it in place. I think these shoes would be perfect for someone new to running off-road.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: ASICS GEL-Trail Sensor 5 review

Our Score: 4 out of 5
Price: £110

Review by Runninged

PROS

1. An issue I always have with trail shoes (probably due to the shape of my foot) is a tight feeling on the top of the foot, the navicular bone, and though not as bad as some shoes I was conscious of this. The positive of this feeling, is that the inner locking lacing support, which looks like two layers of lacing is the reason for this and it means you get extra ankle support without weight.

The Gel Cusioning in Asics shoes is a real bonus and these shoes were very comfortable. I loved the space in the toe box and the feeling that my foot blended into the inner, as if they were made to fit.

The price was high for a second pair of shoes, but it reflects important features such as the material on the upper and the durable outsole. The lugs weren’t very deep and the grip may not be enough for really muddy days, but was perfect on a wet run on the South Downs, known for it’s slippy chalking paths and hills! I swapped the laces for lock laces, as they came undone when wet.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Berghaus Women's Limpet Low review (men's version will be available)

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5
Price: £95

Review by Sama

PROS

1. The sole is made of Terracious Grip rubber compound.

USER REVIEW BY Sama

This lightweight shoe is a good wide fit which provided extra comfort on uneven ground as I felt as if my toes could spread out as I pushed uphill and on the downhill I felt balanced. But it didn’t give much support and I felt a little extra padding around the heel would have been good for me. The upper was made of a nice, breathable material and my feet stayed dry even when running through long wet grass.

The tread of the sole was excellent and the shoe gripped really well on the wet slippery surface. The only negative is that I would prefer a thicker sole as I could feel rocks etc under my feet.

Despite being lightweight, some parts of the shoes felt quite stiff (for example around the ankles) however the forefoot moved with ease so when running up a steep hill I was able to comfortably go up on my toes. The laces were a good length and I could double bow my laces.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Brooks Adrenaline ASR 8 review

Our Score: 4.5 out of 5
Price: £90

Review by MIKE OVENS

PROS

1. The upper fabric provides protection coupled with the desired level of wicking through the mesh compound.

The “Brooks Tongue Tie” is an excellent addition to this shoe, as it stops the tounge travelling and keeps it central.

Being a trail shoe, the flexibility is not that of a standard running shoe, however, they’re not restrictive during foot strike and lift-off and the toe box felt snug and secure.

A great looking shoe that performs well and as is always the case with Brooks, very good value for money.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Brooks Women's Cascadia 6 review

Our Score: 4.5 out of 5
Price: £90

Review by runninged

PROS

1. It’s also packed with green credentials and features with a BioMoGo midsole. Upgrades include improvements to the lugs in the sole, meaning you can adapt to running up and downhill.

Brooks' DNA adaptive cushioning system – which is a shock absorber system that adjusts to the requirements of every type of runner – has been added for tailor-made comfort and support where it’s needed.

USER REVIEW BY runninged

Brooks represent reliability and they always produce the goods for runners. This solid but lightweight shoe has all the features you’d need for running off-road – great grip, support and the ability to adapt to challenging terrain.

The DNA upgrade adds to comfort and the additional traction in the sole for going up and down hills is welcome. Plus there’s an added "Caterpillar Crash Pad" in the heel area to aid in heel-striking.

There’s great arch support and though a heavier-looking shoe than I’m used to (it’s in fact lighter then previous models), I did run well across a muddy course and then down a gavel path. And the Cascadia 6 seems to offer more protection from the elements than previous models, with added suede and hydrophobic foam.

The only downside was that the laces kept coming undone and I’m not as keen on the look of these shoes as others.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Brooks PureGrit

Our Score: 4.5 out of 5
Price: £90

Review by runninged

PROS

1. Brooks describe the PureProject as their Porsche – compared to the Adrenaline range, which is the BMW!

"PureGrit is the lightweight offering for the trail. I loved these shoes. Like others in the PureProject range, these are aimed at neutral, biomechanically efficient runners, so ideal for me. The PureGrit for women weighs in at 215g for women, and 252g for men, and has a 4mm heel to toe drop.

"The shoe has been developed with Scott Jurek, the famous ultra runner featured in Chris McDougall’s iconic book, Born To Run. The marketing video says that the shoe allows you to connect with the trail, and ‘feel more with less’ and it really does.

"My toughest test for the shoes was on a very wet day on the South Downs (along some of the Beachy Head Marathon route). One of the best things about PureGrit is the feeling of security and stability on the wet trails and this combined with a lightweight ride made it an excellent shoe. I’m finding it hard to fault them.

"The security comes from a wide base, and the concave outsole splays out with pressure. The ‘aggressive lugs’ are fantastic – unlike some trail shoes they don’t act like breaks, but do give you confidence on unstable terrain. I ran down a chalky wet trail at full pelt convincing me to try these shoes for early cross-country races. And there was no ankle turning (a problem I’ve found a little recently with another minimalist Trail Shoe the New Balance Minimus). Although this shoe may not suit barefoot purists, for those of us wanting less, but not too little, the PureGrit is the perfect choice.

"I love the lightweight cushioning, but for other online reviewers, this has been a bit of an issue. One blogger has found that if he replaced the footbed the shoe fitted him better. I like the snug feeling, however for some runners this might feel a bit too snug.

"The DNA/BioMoGo midsole is a real plus. This is when I appreciate technology. The midsole feels springy and flexible, and the shape of the shoe which encourages a forefoot strike, make the whole ride very smooth, over far from smooth surfaces. I even wore these shoes on an old-fashioned cinder track for speed-work (with grass spurting out and after rain, this track was more like a trail). However on wet pavements the deep lugs felt more like skates, and after surviving two hours on the wettest day on the Downs, I took a tumble walking on the pavement after stopping for milk!

"In fact most of the testing for these shoes was done in the rain, but fortunately the porous design of the upper allowed for water in, water out – in other words my feet remained dry.

"The heel to toe off-set is 4mm which really allows you to connect with your run,” says Brooks. This is absolutely true. Now that I’ve tested so many ‘minimalist’ shoes I cannot bear the feel of clumpy soles. And over two years of wearing exclusively this type of shoe, I’ve remained injury-free and run PBs over half marathon, 20 miles and the marathon.

"The stiff Ideal Heel consists of a curved outer heel, to encourage midfoot and forefoot striking. As with the PureConnect, the only complaint with the heel was that it often got caught and bent over when I put the shoes on, and was a bit fiddly to get into the right position.

"Brooks Nav Band is designed to offer comfort and support around the middle of your foot (the navicular bone). If you’ve had a dull ache when you’ve tied your laces too tight, you’ll be aware how in badly designed shoes this can cause real discomfort. The Nav Band hugged the foot and made it a flexible and smooth ride on the run.

"PureProject is a winner, and we’re looking forward to the arrival of the new PureDrift shoe an even lighter, more stripped back experience, as well as upgrades in the existing range."

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: HI-TEC V-Lite Infinity Pro HPI review

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5
Price: £95

Review by toddleckie

PROS

1. Stiff and hard at the rear may not suit the heavier runner, especially if they load the heel heavily.
2. Hi-Tec didn’t have the best reputation when I was at school. You might need to hide the brand name so the subconscious brand snob in you doesn’t influence you.
3. Not the most aggressive outsole. If you do a lot of running on muddy and water-logged routes you might need to look for something with a bit more grip.

DETAILS & FEATURES

This shoe comes in a variety of colours and size, including half sizes, described as: An incredibly lightweight adventure sports shoe made for a mix of terrains.

Features include: breathable synthetic upper; seamless Upper Zone Engineering upper design; ion-mask hydrophobic technology; heat seal overlays for lightweight support; TPU shank support with ESS protection; moulded toe cap; reflective safety details; microfibre collar lining.

The insole features a Comfort Tec contoured footbed; the outsole is made from Dual Density Vibram with Dual Density 3D Counter Balance Midsole and Lightweight TPU shank.

USER REVIEW BY toddleckie

The microfibre lining around the rear of the foot was a nice feature that was particularly welcome on chilly mornings, it kept my feet noticeably warmer and felt really comfortable.

This is a lightweight training shoe that’s very responsive. I do a lot of off-road running on hard chalk surfaces so I prefer slightly more cushioning for very long runs. But if you want a responsive ride or are running on softer trail surfaces then there’s more than adequate cushioning.

Although I was initially concerned that there was a little too much feedback over rocky terrain, I quickly got used to the sensation. I would even say that it improved my foot-strike as I was more conscious of how and where my foot was landing.

It didn’t have the most aggressive outsole for a trail/off-road shoe and I think you might struggle in sodden ground or snow. The flip side of this though is the shoe could be used on the road, too. There is also a Vibram outsole that combines two types of rubber – a central sticky section for traction and then a higher density carbon surface on the outside for durability.

The support is at the rear of the foot and is quite stiff, with a very flexible forefoot. This worked well for me, as it didn’t get in the way when I was running on my forefoot over trickier terrain/up hills but kicked in and supported me when I was running downhill. I enjoyed the contrast between back and front as I tend to land on my rear-foot only when going downhill and so used the extra support foot control. If you’re a predominant heel striker though, the shoe might feel a little cumbersome through the rear foot.

On the upper part of the shoe, the integrated tongue along with the toggle lace system that ran up the side from the sole kept my foot snuggly in position, preventing excessive movement. It’s coated in ion-mask, a hydrophobic coating that increases the water resistance but retains breathability, which certainly worked to keep my foot dry and cool in the early morning dew.

The toe box was roomy with a plastic covering to protect the tips of the toes. This is particularly useful if you’re running through wooded areas and prone to catching tree roots with your toes.

The heel was solid which was good for me but might be too much of a compromise on flexibility for some.

Lightweight and responsive - but could feel the sharper rocks beneath my feat.

USER REVIEW BY Adrian Hill

These trail shoes are well cushioned but felt light and worked really well on the road, too. Being lightweight, they were responsive but they seemed to offer plenty of support on uneven terrain. The outsole is made from Vibram and it has the look and quality of a car tyre offering great traction and durability.

On the upper part of the shoe, the ion-mask, hydrophobic coating really did a good job. It says on the label of the shoes, "open mesh desert boots will allow water inside the boot simply by their design. With Hi-Tec ion-mask products the surface of every fibre is enhanced... this ensures that your boots dry quicker and are lighter." Well, these weren't boots, but they definitely kept the water out on a very rainy day and dried really quickly and seemed to be cleaner as the water and mud hadn't had a chance to stick.

The lacing system was 'neat' with good quality flexible laces threaded through metal eyes, which kept the laces firm and secure and even when wet they didn't slip undone (as often happens with other shoes).

There was good support around the heel with a nice fleece lined inner and the toe box offered flexibility and movement and made the shoe responsive on unpredictable paths.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Hoka Mafate review

Our Score: 3 out of 5
Price: £120

Review by runninged

PROS

1. The front half of the outsole is rockered to propel you forward into the next step and with a 40mm high sole profile there’s more than double the surface area which will help you to maintain balance and stability .

Also available in a fully waterproof variant, which makes use of a DuPont Hytrel omniflex membrane.

USER REVIEW BY runninged

“I first reviewed these shoes over a year ago, and remember laughing out loud when I put on these moon-boot shoes. They feel weird – especially to a runner like me, who’s been heading down the minimalist route for the last two years. Weird, but not bad; I get the logic.

The shoes are said to make you feel like you’re floating over terrain. And when I wore them I felt like I was on springs! The huge platform and chunky look is deceptive, as these very comfortable shoes are also very lightweight. Running downhill was great, a novel experience and it was much easier to let go as I felt that the Hoka’s were supporting me. I think these shoes may be nice for heavier, bigger runners than me.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: INOV-8 X-Talon 212 review

Our Score: 4 out of 5
Price: £90

Review by Adrian H

PROS

1. I wondered if they’d fit everyone. I added my orthotics to the shoe and loved the comfort of a lightweight shoe that had a surprisingly sturdy feel.

My preference is for fast off-road running on my forefoot – and these shoes were ideal for that. They look great and felt good on, comfortable and supportive too. The upper is breathable, with a suede lining around the bottom, providing excellent protection.

The laces were really secure and of good quality, not coming undone at all when wet. The lugs on the sole are almost like studs and were great through mud. I ran my Sunday long run off-road at a good pace and my foot felt secure as I took it through some challenging terrain, with little movement, but a very responsive ride.

As with all my lightweight shoes I wonder how long they’ll last and if the price matches the amount of shoe there actually is!

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: New Balance MT10 Minimus Trail review

Our Score: 4.5 out of 5
Price: £70

Review by jonmackintosh

PROS

1. Main issue I have had is that when not wearing socks, the shoe does chafe and cut my heels. Any plaster that I put on to help this generally gets rubbed off in a short space of time!
2. Initial tightness.
3. Concern that the lightweight upper may not take a battering without being damaged.

DETAILS & FEATURES

Takes the proven versatile durability and lightweight traction of a Vibram outsole, and combines it with a fitted, minimalist upper that's comfortable with or without socks.

Features include: deconstructed ACTEVA midsole for flexibility and a featherweight cushion. An odour-resistant, synthetic/mesh upper, provides lightweight comfort and support.

The heel to toe drop is 4mm (a third of that for a traditional running shoe), which gives it the ‘minimalist’ label and works for neutral runners as well as those with gait issues or chronic injury to conquer by learning better form.

USER REVIEW BY jonmackintosh

When I first tried on the shoe I was concerned by the tight sock-like fit but it was actually this that stopped my foot moving around and made them the comfiest shoe I’ve run in. Other than minor heel rub, the fitted shoe ‘became one’ with the foot and I found that I connected with the terrain underfoot.

The sole, consisting of a large number of circles, was far from a conventional look for a trail shoe. However, it worked and kept me from slipping in a muddy forest.

Being a minimal shoe I did not feel that I received any support but, if it makes any sense, the foot also did not feel unsupported. For me it was perfect, I felt I connected with the terrain underfoot whilst hopefully also strengthening both feet and leg muscles.

The upper was lightweight and the laces were easy to tighten and loosen. The space in the toe box was a little restricted when compared to my favoured inov8 Roclite 305s but this is an entirely different shoe.

It’s worth pointing out that these were not the 2E fit that I would normally go for in a New Balance shoe to accommodate my very wide feet and, as such, I doubt that this would be so much of an issue for others.

Aesthetically, the shoe is good to look at. In terms of performance, I definitely rate the shoe, having run over a number of days in both dry, wet, and highly muddy conditions on road, forest and packed trail. I think that the overall feeling of connectivity that I felt with the terrain underfoot is THE thing that sells the shoe to me and it is superior to other barefoot shoes I have tried.

I would buy these shoes and believe that they’re good value for money. I won’t be running ultras in them (although I have seen others do so) but I will continue to use this shoe for shorter distances and I would be keen to see if I could wear for them for a an off-road half marathon. The real test is time, and I have found with other barefoot shoes that the sole wears quickly.

Find New Balance online at www.shopnewbalance.co.uk

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Inov-8 Trailroc 245 Review

Our Score: 5 out of 5
Price: £110

Review by Westie

PROS

1. The postman handed me a package, which I first thought felt rather light knowing it contained a pair of trail running shoes (they weigh-in at 245 grams for a size 8). I ripped open the packet and there they were: the Inov-8 Trailroc 245s in a beautiful blue and lime combo; absolutely stunning. The Trailroc’s are an entirely new model from Inov-8, designed specifically for use on loose, rugged, and eroded terrain.

"Sitting on the secure bottom stair and not a rugged eroded mountain, I tentatively eased my foot into the 245s and sighed with relief; my tootsies can move: they’re free. This is because the shoe is built on Inov-8’s anatomical last which allows the toes to move and splay as millions of years of evolution intended. I walked through to the garden, the sticky rubber outsoles squeaking on the floor tiles as I went, and thought, “Whey hey! These are like slippers, very comfortable and nice and low to the ground. The 245s have a heel to toe differential of 3mm (Inov-8 Shock-Zone 1 arrow) but they are also available with 6mm differential (255s) and the 235 with a zero drop.

“Time for a nosey underneath I thought, so I made myself comfortable in a somewhat damp garden chair and had a look at the out sole. Hmmm, three different types of rubber. This is Inov-8’s new Tri-C Compound which uses a soft sticky rubber on the toe and arch areas for improved grip, an endurance rubber spanning from the heel to the metatarsals for durability, and a hard sticky rubber on the medial and lateral forefoot for improved wear rate.

“As I did a couple of laps of my small garden, the Met-Cradle Lacing system held my feet nicely in place without feeling in any way restricted. As far as the upper is concerned, the 245 has very little construction, it consists of a lightweight mesh which makes the shoe nice and flexible and allows the air to move around the foot keeping it relatively cool. In addition, the Metaflex sole allows the shoe to move and bend as nature intended. With the shoe being so flexible I found that I was able to run naturally without my gait being ‘corrected’.

“The protection offered by the shoe’s rand is less than I’m used to with the 295s, but perfectly adequate and a huge positive is that it does not narrow the toe box, so allowing the toes to spread freely.

“So how did the 245s perform outside my garden? I slipped the shoes on for 30k at Adidas 24 hr Thunder run and several 10k runs since, and can confidently say they’re fantastic and the shoe I’ve been waiting for Inov8 to produce. The level of proprioception is excellent, I know exactly where my foot is when running, and the shoe is responsive and provides a good deal of drive and push-off from the forefoot. My foot is held nicely in place when running without in any way feeling constricted and the toes can wiggle until their heart’s content.

“I have tested this shoe on mud, grass, trails, rocky and stony ground and their performance has been first rate. The 245 is a shoe I feel confident running in because it holds the ground well and the feedback is top drawer. And, not a whiff of a blister or any hot spots!

“So to conclude, I love this shoe; it’s light, flexible, non-restrictive, low to the ground, has space for the toes to splay and is grippy on various terrain: wonderful! Alas, there is a downside and that is the cost. The shoe retails at £110 and I think this is quite steep; but part of me is desperate to overlook the price because they’re everything I want in a trail shoe, I guess only time will tell if the customer is prepared to pay this price, but I think, with a good wind behind me, I’d be tempted!”

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Merrell Lithe Glove review

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5
Price: £100

Review by Julia A

PROS

1. I’m a lightweight, experienced runner and used to pared-down shoes, but not quite as ‘barefoot’ as this. I wear Nike 3.0s for most of my road (and off road) running and am used to a little more heel support. I adapted these shoes by adding in arch support insoles.

The Lithe gloves do fit like a glove! And because of this they allow for smooth, natural running. The sole is also strong and durable looking, with a nice tread and good off-road grip.

There was extra support from the lacing system that held the foot well and supported it under the forefoot.

The upper felt a little bit stiff at first – but I haven’t run enough to wear them in, so this may change.

Jonathan J Mackintosh

“With a name like Mix Master, it may sound like something more suited to ripping up the dance-floor but after a month of testing, the Merrell Mix Master Aeroblock certainly looks like it will rip up the trail.

"Most people will be familiar with Merrell’s excellent minimalist offerings. The Merrell Trail Glove is a personal favourite of mine with an excellent reputation amongst minimalist runners. However, when it comes to medium to long distance running, especially on rocky, rooty terrain, the majority of people will appreciate just a little more comfort and protection. That’s where the Mix Master Aeroblock comes in.

"If the Mix Master Aeroblock is anything to go by, Merrell will soon carve themselves a niche in the lightweight trainer market as well as in the minimalist market. The Aeroblock was comfortable from the outset, although, coming from Inov8 315s and Merrell Trail Gloves, with ample room in the toe box, the snug, glove-like fit of the Mix Master Aeroblock did take a bit of getting used to. I do have particularly wide feet however and any thoughts about the snug fit soon passed once I started running.

"Performance-wise, the Aeroblock coped well with all manner of terrain, from forest tracks and trails to steep muddy ascents and pavements/roads. The only issue I experienced was with some slight slippage on a mossy, damp, compacted trail close to home but then, for comparisons sake, I ran the same trail this weekend in my Inov8s and found the exact same issue.

"I was surprised at just how well the Aeroblock dealt with a muddy session in the Quarrel Woods on the outskirts of Elgin and, especially, with how sure-footed I felt ascending a particularly steep and muddy part of trail.

"The Aeroblock is a lightweight trail shoe that offers a good deal of protection from the terrain and elements. The construction is high quality, just as you would expect from Merrell and, having given the shoe a hammering this past month in all weathers and on a variety of terrains, there is no evidence of any wear on the sole or on the shoe itself.

"I have read a number of reviews of the Aeroblock, from both European and US sources and I have yet to come across a bad review. All are unanimously impressed by this, Merrell’s step into the lightweight trail shoe market.

"I have run the majority of my external runs in the Aeroblock this past month without giving any thought to any of my other trainers and will likely continue to do so. I am looking for a shoe to run medium to ultra distance in and this is a serious contender."

Note: This is a minimalist running shoe. If you are not used to using minimalist shoes, it is advised that you build up your mileage slowly i.e. Run no more than 10% of your typical running distance for the first two to three weeks and then gradually increase mileage by 10 to 20 per cent every couple of weeks.”

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Mizuno Wave Cabrakan 3 review

Our Score: 4 out of 5
Price: £90

Review by David Randall

PROS

1. It feels very comfortable on and seems to offer plenty of support, without being over-cushioned. The sole had enough grip for my off-road run, and I felt balanced on the road to and from the run.

Great resistance from the weather and the water resistant mesh kept me cool and dry. This felt like a solid and durable shoe that will stand the test of time – and trails. It’s also a flexible shoe and I felt I could adapt to the changing terrain without compromising my need for some stability.

The upper felt secure with good laces and tongue and I was reassured by the extra support around the toes on a rocky downhill path. This shoe was ideal for me as I have quite wide feet, need support and am a definite heel striker.

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.

Blog Post: Nike Air Pegasus +28 review

Our Score: 3.5 out of 5
Price: £80

Review by DAVID RANDALL

PROS

1. Nike Zoom unit in the heel offers low-profile, responsive cushioning and a segmented crash pad absorbs shock and delivers a smooth ride.

A notched inner sleeve (bootie) that wraps around the entire foot allows for easy on-and off and an external heel counter wraps the heel for a snug, secure fit.

Flywire, made of thin nylon, ultra strong lightweight fibres in the midfoot panel gives targeted support and a secure fit. Along the midsole, premium Cushlon foam provides soft yet responsive cushioning and a supportive feel.

A mix of rubbers in a waffle pattern offers outsole durability and traction.

USER REVIEW BY DAVID RANDALL

A very comfortable and lightweight shoe (I think I have socks that weigh more!) though on wider feet they're a snug fit at first (especially around the midfoot area). The inner sleeve made them feel more secure, and after about 20 minutes they adapted to my foot shape and felt good.

When I first ran they felt hard and not very responsive, but after a short time they felt softer and gave a smooth ride, helped by the flexible grooves and waffle lugs in the sole. Occasionally, I felt as though the shoe was resisting, especially on harder terrain, but overall I felt in control and this lightweight shoe seemed very durable.

They gave good support at the heel and toe; the midsole less so. They felt very secure in the toe which gave me the confidence to attack downhill without fear of slipping or getting unwanted movement inside the shoe. I lost control on loose or very wet terrain (gravel, very slippery trail etc.), but overall the support was solid.

They were surprisingly roomy in the toe box, accommodating a wider foot such as mine and there was enough space for my feet to breathe. The upper mesh was lightweight and breathable and not compromised by the supportive Flywire.

A good price and although the ride feels a little harder than I prefer, and they're not as supportive as I would like, they arguably make up for those negatives with improved control and comfort tied up in a very lightweight shoe.”

Add your rating using the star system at the top of this article.

Add your own review using the comments section below.
