Why you need them?

Performance or racing shoes lighten the load. Also known as 'flats', cushioning and extra weight is taken out to offer up a more responsive ride and no compromise on speed. Ideal for running fast, either in racing or in speed sessions, and for lightweight runners who train fast, and who are biomechanically efficient with a neutral gait.

Need to know

Racer trainers also fall into the performance category. These are lightweight, streamlined shoes, best suited to the lightweight, biomechanically efficient runner to use for training. In the last couple of years, the 'minimalist' shoe has emerged, promising to offer a barefoot running experience, and there's a cross over with this type of shoe with the existing performance range (for example Brooks' Pure Project).

Like stability shoes the degree of support and cushioning will vary, as will the weight of the shoe, anything between 200g and 400g. Minimalist shoes will be lightweight with a low heel to ground drop.

  • I recently took the plunge and bought some Nike Lunarglide 3 running trainers and I can definately say they were worth every penny and my knee pain has eased too!
