The route of Sunderland’s new Marathon of the North has been announced by Britain’s last Olympic marathon medalist, Charlie Spedding. The route is made up of 26.2 miles of seafront, parks and many of Sunderland’s most important landmarks, like the Stadium of Light, Marina and National Glass Centre.
The race will be an ideal opportunity for marathon first timers or athletes looking to clock a fast time. Charlie Spedding said, “The course has the advantage of being encouragingly flat. Whether aiming for a good time or simply wanting to tackle a marathon for the first time, the Marathon of the North looks like an outstanding option for runners near and far.”
The Marathon of the North and the Sunderland City 10k will be held on 6th May 2012. The weekend forms part of Sunderland’s major events programme for 2012 and will be filled with a wide variety of activities including a live Saturday night of music, pasta parties for runners as well as elite and junior runs to accompany the main race on the Sunday.
Steve Cram said, “The Marathon of the North is a really exciting event that I hope will encourage people of all ages to take up running.“
